Temporary Bride by Linda Ford is a historical western romance. This is a clean read, appropriate for any age. Ms. Ford has penned a well-written book. I love the characters, although there were times I wanted to give Lena a good shake. Lena's husband was killed in an accident and when her house burned down her neighbor Anker offered to marry her. Their story is touching and heartwarming. There is plenty of drama, humor and action to keep a reader's attention. This is a fairly short read, perfect for those with limited reading time. I enjoyed reading Temporary Bride. Temporary Bride is book 1 of the Dakota Brides Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I normally reserve five stars for great classic works of literature, but this book was at the top of my list for the genre it is in so I thought it deserved it. Great books are ones that provide entertainment but also make you think about the important things in life; the best of which teach you something about life. This book has the sweet historical romance done well with a great guy (not perfect, a few insecurities and a stubbornness of his own) and a broken but kind at heart woman. She has been widowed in an accident where the male lead promises his best friend (her late husband) to take care of his wife and son. She stubbornly resists this until her house burns down and she has no choice but accept his help. They get married so she and her son can live with him through the winter until she can rebuild (though she has no means to do so); planning to annul it then. It is completely irrational for her to think she can rebuild on her own with a toddler to take care of and the fire and other incidents should show her this. However, we find her pathological need to do this on her own has to do with an abusive childhood, early loss of her mother, and abandonment by her father to a guardian who told her she owed her for everything and if she disobeyed she paid dearly. This guardian used Scripture to justify her harsh treatment, abuse, and working her to the bone getting all “she owed her†for not putting her out on the street. Some have commented that she should just get over it after her new husband treats her well for a couple of months. However, I have worked with trauma victims who had the abandonment and type of mental abuse she suffered. They often get through their childhood where they had no control over the hardships they suffered and no option to leave like adults do by building fierce walls around their hearts determination to never feel that type of pain again. They build systems like her nothing is for free mindset to gain some sense of control. They do not get over it by having a loving great spouse for a few months after spending many crucial formative years of trauma and abuse. It takes a lot of work and time for them to accept unconditional love from God and people. The author handled the issues and questions Lena had quite believably from my experience. I did think her switching from her shutting him out completely to deciding to stay was a bit abrupt. I think if she showed more emotion and more wavering near and into the switch it might have helped. The explanations of the unconditional, unwavering, incomprehensible love of God using Scripture and the personal experiences of various people was very well done. It wasn’t preachy or judgmental by the guy and others but done lovingly and patiently. Showing as well as telling is important. He was very patient with her, but his temperament and positive outlook on life helped explain it. It takes that to get through to those with deeply ingrained trauma and beliefs. She tried to show him care and concern in the only ways she knew how. I think people were a bit harsh with her. Try to show some of the patience and unconditional love the book talks about, people! This book is well worth the time and money, but the great thing is it’s shorter and cheaper than much less well done novels. Bravo! Much enjoyed!
This historical Christian romance was full of hopeful and loving thoughts about Gods love and provision. I think the book would be uplifting to many women today, although the "temporary bride" Lena, sure seemed to miss it for the whole book! It was hard to empathize with Lena's constant denial of help from a loving and patient husband who just wanted to help her and be loved in return. She was so stubborn and hurtful to him that I couldn't much like her. I wished the author had "lightened up" on Lena's constant dwelling on past hurts and her wish to not accept any help. But I did enjoy the story and found the Norwegian customs interesting.
I just finished this wonderful book and have to say it totally blessed me. God used this book to encourage me, and the verses and dialogue used in the story really spoke to me. I think I highlighted more lines in this that any other book I've read, lol. I totally fell in love with Anker, wow what a wonderful man. His outlook and personality was amazing. Charlie was such a sweet, smart little guy. Loved him and Anker's relationship. I did have a bit of trouble liking Lena and so many times I was silently griping at her for being hard and ungrateful for all of the wonderful things Anker was doing for her. I couldn't understand why she wanted so badly to leave Anker's beautiful home just to go back to her land and live alone with Charlie in a soddy! Sometimes I wanted to shake some sense into her, lol. Was so glad when she finally came around. The epilogue was a sweet surprise and the book left me feeling light and happy. Going right now to buy the next one. Linda Ford is my current fav author. :)
Well written, grammatically correct, charming characters, and full of love. A little too much emphasis on the conflict about God's love and what a stubborn person the main character was. It was a little too contrived.
She was too stubborn for her own good, especially for her child. She wanted to do everything on her own. But her neighbor promised her husband he would take care of them. She was forced to marry after her house was destroyed, but was only going through with it for the winter, then get it annulled. Will she learn to accept help & learn to love & trust another? Will she ever apply God's grace to her heart & life? Sweet, clean, wholesome romance.
I cannot believe that Lena is so self centered. Her husband is dead, she is alone with a small child and refuses help from her neighbor. When her house burns down, she has to look to him for help. She marries him in name only with the promise he will annul the marriage as soon as she can rebuild her house.
I chose this book with some trepidation having never read Linda Ford before. What a delight to see the story unfold dealing with real problems in a Godly, biblical manner. Norwegian tradition and history added another dimension to the story of a woman struggling with her faith and ability to trust God and herself. I highly recommend Temporary Bride and I already plan to search out more Linda Ford's books.
