Daniel felt broken; he was newly retired from the Marine Corps, and wandering. He didn't know what he was to do with the rest of his life, but something is drawing him to Sin City. He meets a 5 years old boy, Nathaniel, and his young mother on the bus to Las Vegas. He is drawn to help them and that "would lead me on the most dangerous path of my life"."Tested" is the story of a one-in-a-million type man, a true war hero 🇺🇸 trying to understand what he had seen and done, looking for truth and meaning. Daniel Briggs is more real in this book than any of the other stories where he is a prominent character. This is a humbling story that will rip your heart out. A real mystery to solve of which you will not be able to guess the ending, provides the suspense. But the real joy of the story is that by telling one soldier's story, the Author, C.G. Cooper, brings honor to all the heroes who fight for our freedom.....by "doing the right thing".
And what a series it has been. Daniel is a man of few words and lots of empathy. He almost appears to be telepathic; he seems to be tuned into the world around him in a way that defies the ordinary senses. It's always been apparent that he had great trauma during his time as a Marine sniper. Here's the back story. The author's glimpses into Daniel's heart, soul and his emotions is incredible in intensity and believability. I wondered what experiences the author called upon when he was writing this. Whether you've read another book that focused on who Daniel is or not, do not miss this one.The author states this is his last "Daniel" novel. I hope not. This is a character I'd like to read about again.
Mr. Cooper has again given us a GREAT book, finishing the story of Daniel Briggs, before he runs into Cal. I would put this story on myMUST READ LIST. If you have not started reading the series, the good news is you have some great reading ahead of you! Please check "Yes" if you have found this review helpful. I rely upon others' reviews to make an informed decisionanytime I make a purchase, so it is my intention to help others do the same.I welcome any questions or feedback.
I have read all of Mr. Cooper's books and received a much better idea of who Daniel Briggs is. He is like Jack Reacher and wanting to help out the underdog - even if they don't want to be helped. Tested finds Daniel in trouble after helping a single mom and her young son in Las Vegas. People are disappearing and police are sniped upon. He finally gets lost in the desert and has an epiphany - scrutinizing his inner demons and communicating with the beast inside of him. He is a risk taker and doesn't flinch, even when he knows he is in a sniper's crosshairs and could die at any moment. The story takes a crazy turn near the end - the results surprising me to no end. Tested is a page turner and readers are held on the edge of their seats while the story unravels and Daniel is no longer the person he was when arriving in Las Vegas only a couple of days earlier.Great job Mr. Cooper! Keep 'em coming!John Podlaski, author"Cherries _ A Vietnam War Novel" and "When Can I Stop Running?"
I was introduced to C. G. Cooper in an anthology of novels in support of the natural disasters that occurred from the series of hurricanes that devastated PR, Texas, Florida, and the rest of the Carribean. There were many new to me authors that I enjoyed but this one spoke to me in a unique way. I enjoyed his contribution and have since read his Daniel Briggs series and have enjoyed them totally. The writing is concise, fast-paced, and filled with unexpected twists and turns that induce the reader to read just one more chapter before stopping. I found it impossible to stop before the end, however. And immediately purchased the next book to continue the saga. I am currently trying to decide which series will be next. I promise this same intrigue is waiting to anyone reading Adrift and the others.
Daniel Briggs, the heroic war assassin, goes to Vegas and finds himself the protector of a downtrodden mother and, especially, her young boy. In so doing he must immediately and unexpectedly fend off hoods. His web of entanglement eventually includes people ranging from nice guys to nice prostitutes to no-so-nice others, and Daniel has a helluva time trying to figure it all out. This is a highly moving, at times gut-wrenching, tale of an extremely tough man trying to do right, of Daniel trying to help others but being violently resisted at every turn and often witnessing deaths for which he feels responsible. These touching events cause him great defeatism but a new sense of empathy. And then, what an ending! To top it off, this book is exceptionally well written.
Another great read. I usually read a book over a period of several days. Read this one cover to cover non stop. Never figured out who the killer was until it was revealed . Want say more for now you will just have to read it for yourself. I certainly have enjoyed every Daniel Briggs book as well as those after he leaves Vagas.
Mr. Cooper’s stories have grown in complexity and character depth. Again, I truly enjoy stories where the good guys prevail, and the good guys are truly good men who may question their own damaged psyche and motivations. I’ve found in life that men of action, especially the good ones, constantly question their motivations and the consequences of their behaviors. Daniel Briggs is someone I recognize after 30 years of law enforcement work in some of the toughest neighborhoods our republic has to offer. Good cops, good soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines have much in common - belief in something bigger than their own personal interests. If you're such a person, Daniel Briggs could be your best friend - especially if it’s hard to talk to people who have not walked in your shoes and want simplistic answers to complicated questions. I’m a big fan of Mr. Coooer’s work and I recommend it for everyone whose ever walked the walk of a true selfless warrior or anyone who supports them.
