Brooklyn, New York City's most populous borough, is ideal for walking. One of many things that make the borough so enthralling is the difference between neighborhoods, often clearly noticeable when passing from one neighborhood to another. Brooklyn - Kings County - was incorporated into New York City in 1898; and while there was then a City of Brooklyn, much of today's Brooklyn was not part of that entity. Each neighborhood has a different history, from the early times until the present; and each has a somewhat different identity today. This book tells the story of each and every neighborhood, along with its history and its present. It also tells which are the main drags and the main shopping areas, and what sights and sites there are in each neighborhood; interesting pictures, both old and new, are included for each neighborhood. At the end is an interesting appendix with statistics for each neighborhood, including percentage of each ethnicity/race, average income, population, and percentage of owner-occupied versus renter-occupied housing units. This reviewer's only gripe (a decidedly minor one!), is that this section would have been better if it was at the end of each neighborhood chapter. There is a similar neighborhood book about Queens; when will there be ones about neighborhoods in the Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan? This book is indispensable to anyone walking in Brooklyn, or simply interested in the city.

As a couple of other reviewers, I was disappointed in the lack of information about the neighborhoods in the 50s and 60s, when I grew up in East Flatbush. Even still, it is fascinating to learn of the full history of each neighborhood. How and when the original Dutch settlers bought the various sections from the Canarsee and Rockaway Native Americans. It is also interesting to learn of the fates of the various neighborhoods and their changing ethnic faces. I ALSO recommend the book "It Happened In Brooklyn: An Oral History Of Growing Up In The Borough In The 1940s, 1950s, And 1960s." The two books are VERY different. While this book is also light on the 50s and 60s, it brings back wonderful memories of Coney Island. It is actually a compilation of anecdotal memories from many people who grew up in Brooklyn, some of whom are world famous for various reasons!

I have a relative that moved to Brooklyn. This book was fun and lots of information to help get to know the different areas.

Very interesting book for anyone who is from Brooklyn. Managed to trace where relatives were from and check out their neighborhoods.

I grew up in Brooklyn and learned so many new and historical facts. When I visit again I'll look at Brooklyn with a new perspective.

This is a good resource book for those who have heard of a neighborhood but know little about it. The book should have gone into more detail and provided more pictures but it is, nonetheless, a good book to own.

I am glad that I purchased this book. It is a great book to have out. It is a conversation starter. It gives great history. It is a good reference book.
