Review

“The Power of Focusing clarifies an essential human skill many of us have forgotten and takes it a quantum leap farther along its evolutionary path. Here are germinal teachings and deep human wisdom expressed in a way that can improve anyone’s emotions, well-being, and life.” —Dan Millman, author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior and The Laws of Spirit “Ann Weiser Cornell approaches Focusing with moment-by-moment sensitivity and years of depth. This is one of the most powerful therapeutic techniques of which I am aware an may even be said to be the basis of all good therapy.” —Jeffrey Mishlove, author of Roots of Consciousness and host of television’s Thinking Allowed “Most people make life’s important decisions by using their intellect. They think and become logical. Thus their path in life becomes path-o-logical. As a physician, I know how important our feelings are. We store a lifetime of feelings in our bodies. If not felt and responded to, they lead to disease—once again, a state of pathology. Learn to focus, and let the wisdom of your body teach you what it feels like to be happy. The wisdom of this book can help you heal the pathology. This book is an excellent resource for healing your life and body while guiding you to your life’s true path.” —Bernie Siegel, M.D.,author of Love, Medicine and Miracles; Peace, Love, and Healing; and How to Live Between Office Visits“I have included Ann Weiser Cornell’s Focusing work in Intuitive Training classes with excellent results. I see the Focusing technique as an invaluable tool for students of the inner life, particularly psychic-intuitive training.”—Helen Palmer, author of The Enneagram

This is the second book on Focusing I've read (the first being Eugene Gendlin's original book), but it's the one I find myself recommending to others as their introduction to the process. Whereas Gendlin's book begins with two somewhat opaque, philosophical introductions that might put some readers off, Ann Weiser Cornell starts with a very straightforward explanation of what Focusing is, its history, and how it can help you. She then goes on to explain the process of Focusing in a very nuts-and-bolts manner, beginning with the crucial step of creating an inner attitude of safety, empathy, and kindness in oneself.Cornell elaborated on Gendlin's simpler six-step method to create what she calls Inner Relationship Focusing. The main difference between Gendlin's approach and hers is that Cornell's version emphasizes being in relationship to one's felt senses, characterized by sensitivity, empathy, and compassion. The felt sense is, after all, a part of you expressing itself in relation to some part of the world in a particular way. She derived this approach from Gendlin's philosophical works, in which he talks about human beings as interactions, and this more fluid, dynamic, relational way of regarding the bodily manifestation of that interaction makes sense in this light. It is essentially the deepest form of self-love and self-compassion one can exercise, and has a lot of healing potential.I would still recommend reading Gendlin's original book, which I personally found more evocative and he conveys more of the profound implications of Focusing for one's life. I also find Gendlin's six steps more appropriate sometimes, especially when I want to work with a more holistic sense of a large situation in my life, such as a larger sense of being stuck in life or despair. Cornell's approach works better for working with smaller aspects of myself that might be more easily personified, like an inner child or adolescent, or an angry part of me, etc. But I usually combine the two approaches, and have had good results.

this is a rare book that you can actually get some healing just from reading it. the title says it all. ann weiser cornell writes in a style that helps you pay attention inside yourself as you are reading it and feel what she is talking about, if you pay close enough attention to yourself as you read it. it is not like most other self help books where you go to the end of the chapter and do some exercises which i personally don't like to do. it takes too much time. this book is very effective. just by reading it you experience what she is describing. for me, focusing is an easy and very effective technique to learn to understand your self and your feelings better. it is a very easy to read, practical. and very short length book. i think you will enjoy it and get great value from it. i know i did. i have had a lot of trauma from childhood that has really made it difficult for me to access feelings and this is one of the best techniques i have found.

This book has much better formatting than the original work on Focusing. I bought them both. This one is user friendly and has good flow.

This book was really helpful to me to take time every day and just allow myself to focus inward and prevent things from piling up inside and taking over. Really a great book. Thank you.

For a beginning Focuser, this book is the clearest, most thoughtful and helpful book I've read. It answers the questions "what" "why" and "how" to the extent that when you finish the book, you'll be able to start Focusing on your own (or, ideally, with a partner.)

Great book and practice

I have found Ann Cornell to be one of the most "earthy" writers when it comes to understanding focusing. This is a great introductory book to understand focusing.

This was the second book I read on Focusing. The first was by the originator of the process, Eugene T. Gendlin, who teaches in a midwest university. Ann Weiser Cornell, Ph.D. was one of his students. Her book is easier to read (not as dry as his) and you can learn all you need to know to use the process yourself with her excellent book. I highly recommend the process to anyone interested in working out personal issues on their own.
