About the Author

Matthew Valan lives with his wife of forty-one years on the home quarter of the Red River Valley family farm his paternal grandfather founded in 1903. Valan earned his BA in Political Science and History from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and holds a Master of Divinity Degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. Valan's entire career of thirty-six years in youth and family ministry has taken place in the Fargo Moorhead (North Dakota and Minnesota) community. He is a nationally recognized speaker on youth, family, and educational issues. Valan serves on the Board of Moorhead Area Public Schools and is active in many community organizations. He is currently senior pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Fargo and preaching pastor of The Hour of Worship television ministry reaching parts of a four-state area as well as southern portions of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Valan and his family are in the second year of a native prairie restoration project on their back forty called Dreamfields. Together with his wife, children, and grandchildren he rides horses, skis on water and snow, and hunts with his three dogs: Pre, Kaizer, and Doc. Valan loves to read and write in the log cabin he and his wife built with friends on the farm in 1980. A cancer and abuse survivor, he lives each day with a spirit of gratitude.

interested as the author is from the n.d./minn. area, and as a book club we do try and read local authors. it was sad. liked the fact it did not drag on about things--got it said and over with.

Couldn't put the book down. Finished reading this book all in one afternoon. I felt every emotion---cried, laughed, mourned. Such raw emotion and brutal honesty. Felt like I was on the journey with the author. Sheds light on mental health issues that were often kept in the shadows during that period of time.

Its a very emotional book. It opened my eyes to the situations we all had growing up in that era, no matter who we are. I read it from start to finish as soon as I got it. Gave to my daughter to read.

I am not a regular book reader. Liked the short chapters and could not put it down. Read it in one sitting other than bathroom breaks. Personally know the author and community involved. Had no idea of history. Somewhat disturbing, but life is not all roses or scripted. Have shared with many people that wanted to read. Most people read within a day or two!

Excellent book,well written and easy to read. I couldn’t put it down. Brutally honest look into how mental illness affects the whole family, but the realization often doesn’t come until later in life.

I sat and read the book in an afternoon. It is full of emotion and brings conversations into the open that need to be talked about.

Just finished reading Sister Secrets. A true account of a family’s secrets and how the author finds hope, healing and peace through God’s grace. Excellently written and magically descriptive!

Very honest and thought provoking book. I think it would be a wonderful book for a book club discussion.
