About the Author

Elizabeth Gibbons Van Ingen is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, with a major in the Humanities. After living in many places in the world, raising three daughters, and adjusting to diverse traditions, she now resides in the Denver area. She has been published in two anthologies: "The Voices of Alzheimer's” and "The Voices of Caregivers,” edited by the Healing Project. This is her first book.

An incredible book that I have purchased several times to pass on to friends who are dealing with Alzheimer's as caregivers.Enlightening, tear-jerking, educational memoir that spans the last of the Twentieth and early Twenty First centuries, and ranges all over the world--from Iran to North Africa to South Africa to small town Iowa, and fimnally to Denver. A story of loss and equally of a woman's growth as a person and artist before, during and after dealing with the tragedy of her husband's battle with Alzheimer's. The story is intimately told so that you know and love all the characters by the end which, appropriately, is not death.

I lived in the same neighborhood as Ms. Van Ingen did in Muscatine Iowa. My husband and I know the Tripps. My husband and I were a young couple with two very young children when we lived there. I always admired Ms. Van Ingen's taste and her class. This book is well written and though I confess to feeling somewhat involved, I felt it was well written.It did prove my point to my children, to always be aware of your finances and never let other people take care of you. My husband and I are faced with dementia in his family and this certainly is a blueprint of how to handle these types of issues.

Long version of a magazine journal piece. Would not recommend this for anyone.Obvious journalistic effort of novice author to write her story regarding her life, marriage and how she dealt with husband's Alzheimer's.Kudos to this author for sharing some of her unique experiences but certainly not exceptional writing nor was it an exceptional story.

A long journey, including colorful insights of Iran, Morocco and South Africa, and other places where Van Ingen's family lived for twenty years, and of Iowa, where they settled upon their return to the U.S.Melissa

Beautifully written, Elizabeth takes us through her life of adventure, love, joy, and sacrifice. We witness her thoughtful determination to experience and embrace all aspects of her life. And we are richer for it.

A story of love, life's trials and intrigue which held my interest with every word. I could hardly put the book down!

I was a silent character in the author's story who cheered for her, loved her, gave her advice, laughed with her, and lived vicariously through her UNTIL the many roles she had to play to survive and not lose herself in coping with her husband's Alzheimers became almost intolerable. Not only is the book well organized, but I felt like I was actually "experiencing" and "feeling" the author's life as it unfolds.The story portrays a woman who is sincere, self-assured, and independent, yet reveals vulnerability and disappointment as life takes twists and turns which require dependability and strength. "Kismet" is a powerful read. Liz Van Ingen's story will serve as a book of survival, hope, and healing to anyone who is navigating the scary waters of Alzheimer's.
