Kazuaki Tanahashi, a Japanese-trained calligrapher, is the pioneer of the genre of "one stroke painting" as well as the creator of multicolor enso (Zen circles). Enlightenment Unfolds is a selection of the writings of the founder of the Soto Zen Buddhist tradition, Eihei Dogen. It is the follow up to a collection of writings put together called Moon In A Dew Drop. The two collections are a beautiful selection of Dogen’s writings to give a broad sampling of the vast amount of his writings.He was a prolific writer in medieval Japan, covering topics of zen practice that ranged that covered everything from instructions on how to sit in zazen, to poems, instructions for the cooks and many other topics. But in this particular volume Kazuaki Tanahashi and the people he collaborated with chose a diverse selection to give the picture of Dogen as “a whole person.” This is no small task, as Eihei Dogen was a spiritual giant, a mystic, a scholar the founder of one of the most significant schools of Zen Buddhism still in existence today.What I really liked about this selection is that you have some of Dogen’s writings which teach some of his most important lessons of how to live as a Zen Buddhist, such as in the fascicle Eight Awakenings of Great Beings. You have teachings encouraging all people to learn The Way entitled Recommending Zazen to All People. There are practical writings on Guidelines for Officers of The Eihei Monastery. And there are inspiring writings for practitioners like Continous Practice. There are many different writings to give you a broad picture of the depth and scope of Dogen.As a practitioner of Soto Zen, I have found several of these writings one which I have read and reread as instructions on how to practice, how to live and just to be inspired in how to pursue practice wholeheartedly, something which Dogen always stresses.

This is a book that allows the reader to deeply enter and learn from a master. The teachings area die clear and accessible over a wide Range of life experience. A valuable book for anyone interested in Buddhism beyond the surface.

I translation, and a good one. This requires a desire to really learn about Zen. After reading many books about zen buddhism and working on a practice, I read this book. It is most definitely enlightening and I highly recommend it if you are serious about the study of Zen.

A well written book Kazuaki Tanahashi that covers the entire range of Dogen's works. Dogen is a difficult subject and this book handles him well.

Great work of an esencial master!

With clarity of writing and mindstreaching concepts, this is a hard book to beat. Excellent definitions, explainations of historical Buddhist practices, names of historical personages, and bibliography make this book also an excellent reference work.
