#10,609 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I’ll just say up front: Yes, this book is about swinging, in part. Yes, there are explicit sex scenes. That may not be up your alley, and that’s okay! But if you’re looking for a well-written and compelling exploration of suburban malaise and marriage, I recommend this book. It’s kind of like Big Little Lies mixed with The Graduate, with just a touch of 50 Shades to make things interesting for your book club. ;)

First, I will say that once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. I stayed up late to finish it. I read a lot and that doesn't happen often. Early on, you get the sense that it's going to be a "train wreck" and you can't help but look. This story is engaging, intriguing and even a bit titillating. But it's also thought provoking and turns out to be an parable about married life, the "Lifestyle" and the pursuit of "happiness" and desires. I've continued to think of this story days after I've finished reading. In reading this book I felt some similarities with Kenny Wright's "Something Forbidden" and Ben Boswell's "Summer Swing." I especially couldn't help but draw parallels between Theo and Mia from this book and Greg and Chloe from Wright's book. The genres are different but they are all different takes on a similar tale of swinging and extramarital adventures. This one, to be sure, is not a happy swingers erotica tale but rather a thought-provoking drama with some suspense.I get the sense that this book was intended to be a cautionary tale...or at least there are some lessons that could be learned from it. One could walk away from it believing that the swinging lifestyle and consensual non-monogamy are to blame for all of the problems faced by the primary characters but I don't think that's it. This story starts off with the Eric and Jayne in a basically good albeit stagnated relationship, Jayne frustrated and wondering what's missing and Eric wandering aimlessly and crossing lines. So they're not starting off from a good place (marital malaise) and their relationship needs some work and a spark. They are clearly both ripe for an affair. So when they inadvertently stumble into the world of swinging it's bound to be problematic and the problem is not the Lifestyle or swinging itself but it's the lack of honesty with themselves and to each other. Jayne is really using the Lifestyle to pursue a selfish guilt-free affair with permission and Eric acquiesces out of guilt over his own indiscretion. They fool themselves into believing that they are doing it for their marriage ("for us") when that's simply not true. They are not a relationship-strong couple engaging in a shared adventure for the benefit of the other or the marriage as a unit. Rather it's the selfish pursuit of desires in an attempt the rid the lack of contentedness in search of that "something more" that will make them "happy" only to find that they already have it and the grass isn't truly greener on the other side...nearly at the cost of their marriage. Some of the other reviewers mention that some of the scenes are "graphic." I felt the opposite and to me the explicit scenes were abbreviated and summarized. That's okay for this story because it's not erotica but on the other hand this is a story about sexual temptation and desire that the readers are experiencing vicariously through Eric and Jayne. So I would have preferred more detailed depictions of their experience. In some of the non-sexual scenes the authors describe surroundings, clothing etc.. in excruciating detail then skip over the sex when that is what is really the impetus of the story. People have differing sensibilities when it comes to that sort of thing I guess...There is also something that I wonder if the authors did intentionally. I'm pretty sure that Theo did not use a condom at the A Burger. To the detail-observant reader this could create some concerns with things that happen later in the book...like YIKES! Could Jayne still be lying about her confidence over that later issue...or is she unaware and it's just a further caution flag for the readers? Or was it truly resolved by the timing facts? Or was it an oversight by the authors?...I was concerned enough that I went back to the A Burger scene and looked! In the end, this is not an erotic novel. It's not a happy swinger's tale. At times it's not even fun. But it is an excellent read and a quality, worthwhile experience. With it's drama and suspense it is entertaining but it also seems to have some good messages and every couple reaching the proverbial 7 year mark should probably read it, especially those who are considering putting a "white rock" on their front porch. Sometimes enough is enough....

**MILD SPOILERS**The Swing of Things has the potential to be an insightful and interesting foray into the world of suburban swinger culture. Instead the reader is treated to some steamy, Cinemax-level shenanigans, followed by an admittedly interesting twist that leads to some pretty heavy-handed moralizing about the nature of the lifestyle. The first half to two-thirds of the book is a slow build of seduction that suggests a genuinely thoughtful and balanced payoff. The bedroom scenes are not overdone, let alone approaching the content of books like Fifty Shades of Grey (I can only assume, not having read them). I even found the twist toward the end of the book as well as the surprise fate of one of the supporting characters engaging enough to continue reading through to the end.Where they (the book is written by two authors writing under one pen name) lost me, however, was the hard right turn they take in the third act in terms of being judgmental of the lifestyle. I'm not a swinger myself, but I feel like I'm definitely more open-minded about the choices the main characters make than the writers themselves. It just seems like they could have struck a more realistic middle ground instead of being so overly judgmental.

I didn't know what to expect going into this book, but the story had me hooked from the first chapter. I found it harder and harder to look away as Eric and Jayne's decisions transformed their world into something unthinkable and they struggled to find the path to a better relationship. The racy scenes - of which there are many - were warranted and presented with taste, making for a book that's both sexy and classy. All in all THE SWING OF THINGS is a provocative, entertaining, and memorable read.
